Alexadroupolis is the capital of the Prefecture of Evros. It is a beautiful city by the sea that is noted for its fun-loving and hospitable people. In the 21st century Alexandroupolis became a center for commerce and communication with the expansion of its harbor and the development of railway, sea and road connection with Burgas (Black Sea, Bulgaria), Crimea, Novorossiisk and Moscow and the completion of Egnatia Highway.
Its population is currently circa 70.000 people and it is expected to supersede 100.000 in coming years. Its exquisite town planning, its elegant modern buildings, the traditional market place and everyday life give the appearance of a modern city, which, however, blends beautifully with its more traditional elements.
The city's landmark, the famous lighthouse called 'Faros', dominates the beautifully designed square from the year 1880. With its 27m of height and 23 miles light visibility, is considered one of the highest in Greece.
Should you wish to get better acquainted with the city's history and explore its cultural and natural inheritance a visit to the Historic-Cultural Museum, the Ethnological Museum of Thrace, and the Ecclesiastical Museum or the Museum of Natural History is strongly advised.
In addition you can enjoy the sea and the sun at one of the area's organized beaches while nightlife offers numerous central and beach cafe-bars, nightclubs and of course the traditional bouzoukia for a taste of original Greek entertainment.
A visit to the sea village Makri, 12 km west of Alexandroupolis, is advisable for its traditional fish taverns, its charming little harbor and, in particular, for its impressive archaeological site, with finds from prehistoric to Byzantine times (Cave of the Homeric Cyclops among them). Via the village of Dikella on the west you will come to the archaeological site of Mesembria-Zone, an impressive 7th cent settlement with a sanctuary of Demeter and a temple of Apollo.
Alexandroupolis' cuisine offers a combination of flavors and testes from the West and the East. Local costal or not taverns serve local specialties and excellent local wine and 'tsipouro' along with fresh fish and fine meat.
Alexandroupolis, apart from being preferential center of a really charismatic region, is also truly hospitable and enjoying. It is the best way to start or finish a wonderful journey.
